Hi Hannes, We are back home and busy at work. Would like to thank you for arranging an package with an itinerary ideally suited for the length of our vacation. When we initially decided to visit Chile our focus was Patagonia. While we enjoyed that part of our tour, we think the overall highlight was Chiloe--a region of the country we may not even have visited without your strong recommendation. We had a great time on our return to the Lake District from Chiloe and, since we kept picking up hitchhikers, even got to know some of the locals. Frutillar was wonderful and on Osorno we actually hiked up to the snowline. Our flight from P. Montt to P. Arenas was delayed by several hours but we still drove to Fort Bulness and perhaps enjoyed a unique experience seeing it in late twilight with no one else around. The next day we toured the cemetery and two museums before heading for Natales. The hotel in Torres del Paine was wonderful (better, I think, than Hotel Grey which we popped into) and we did all the hikes you had recommended. The hotel in Natales was another unique experience and the boat trip to the glaciers was good fun. We will get in touch with you when we are ready for our next trip to South America and will also pass the word along to our acquaintances. All the best, Arun & Varsha
Dear Hannes, We are now back in England after over a month in South America. The highlight of the trip was your wine tour. Brenda and I have been on many wine trips over the years, so we can say with some experience that you organised a world class trip around the vinyards of Argentina and Chile. You arranged access to vinyards that no private individual could have achieved and the food and accomodation matched the high quality of the wines. Your attention to detail, and your infectious enthusiasm convinced Brenda and I that you will go far in your career. Regards, David and Brenda
Overall we are really pleased with the trip you organized for us, and we will certainly recommend you to anyone we know who might be traveling in South America.
The hotels were very nice and exceeded our expectations. Jaimie and Rafael were very courteous and informative about Santiago. We really liked the pedestrian-only street in Pucon with all the restaurants and the market.
By this time we were finding that Chilean people are courteous and friendly, and we never got hassled by anyone on our entire trip. We never made it to the 3 lakes at the park out of Pucon – I “ran out of gas” after 1.5 hours of climbing. The pinguinera at Punta Arenas was too much fun. The tour guide had great difficulty getting all of us back onto the ferry.
The hike up to the Torres was well beyond my abilities, so we only had distant views of the torres.
I am so glad we did not stay at the Hotel Torres. Our room 338 at Hotel Serrano had to be THE best room in the hotel, since it was a 3rd-floor end unit with a balcony and had a clear view of the horns.
We scouted a place to shoot sunrise and selected a hill next to Camp Pehoe. I took the attached photo during a breathtaking 2 minutes when the sun poked through the heavy clouds before it was covered up again. This is actually 10 separate photos that I stitched together. I consider it the best photo I have ever taken, and I will remember the sight that morning forever.
Our room at the hotel in Concon had a fabulous view – it’s one of the best hotel rooms we’ve ever had because of the view and breeze.
To summarize: the highlights for us were (1) an evening in Pucon, (2) the pinguinera in Punta Arenas, (3) the horns at Torres del Paine, (4) the hike past Saltos Grande in Torres del Paine, (5) the guanacos, (6) the hotel room in Concon, and the coastal road from Concon to Valpo.
Thanks again for all of your expert work and for getting LAN to behave reasonably!
From February 27 to March 9, 2207 I experienced a rewarding educational experience; a wine tour led by Mr. Hannes Schonauer of Montanamar Tours Chile. The original tour was planned for an Austrian wine club. An English couple and I were allowed to join this group to make a full bus. Hannes effectively communicated to the group in English and German and to all the Chileans and Argentinians in effective Spanish.
We visited 13 wineries from the biggest to the smallest, from the most modern to the traditional. We saw large new wineries that were spectacular in there architecture and small functional wineries that were there competition. We met vintners who grew their grapes and made their wine using classical techniques, and those who used more environmentally friendly techniques and those who followed a more homeopathic style of viniculture.
Through Hannes arrangements we were able to meet the owners of the properties, and the wine makers, and were able to ask all kinds of questions regarding the growing and harvesting of grapes and making of wine. In the large wineries we met the young men and women who are making and selling today's style of wine. We were educated in the geography of both the Chilean and Argentina wine areas, and we became aware of the two great grapes of the area Carmenere and Malbec.
Hanes did an effective job of managing hotels, buses and meals. We had variety in places where we ate. Some lunches were at the vineyards with spectacular scenery, some were inside local restaurants. Dinner was sometimes in the hotel or some cozy outside restaurant. All the hotels were small and comfortable and located with an easy walk to shopping and restaurants.
I enjoyed my wine torn of Chile and Argentina and would recommend it to all of my wine drinking friends. Thanks Hannes for a job well done.
Greetings from Oregon and best wishes to you and your family way down there in Chile.
Thank you for the wonderful tour -- my first group tour ever -- I've always traveled alone, and was worried that I would feel uncomfortable in a group. But you made me feel very comfortable, and I am glad I went along with you and the others to Patagonia.
